James Regan named as ‘keeper for Cardiff MCCU game
Academy youngster James Regan has been named as wicket-keeper for Somerset’s opening first class match of the season against Cardiff MCCU which gets underway at Taunton Vale at 11am on Saturday.
With several of the senior players being rested ahead of the Championship opener on Thursday against Middlesex the side will be captained by James Hildreth.
Hildy is no stranger to captaincy and winter 2010-11 he skippered the England Lions, however he is relishing the prospect of taking charge of the Somerset side for the first time, against Cardiff.
“It’s obviously a proud moment for me to captain Somerset in a first class game, which is something that I have always wanted to do and hopefully I will do some more of it in the future.”
Regarding James Regan who will be making his first start in the senior side Hildy said: “I remember my first class debut against Derbyshire in 2003. Dominic Cork bowled me twice in the game and I remember it very well. Jamie Cox came up to me afterwards and said you make your debut once, which has stuck with me, so James will remember this game for the rest of his life.”
Hildy went on: “Although I haven’t seen a lot of James Regan ‘keeping, he looks really good but what I have seen he looks a really good talented and well organised young cricketer and hopefully this will be the start of a good career for him.”
Regarding his own form going into this game Hildy said: “It was pleasing to get a hundred in the pre-season against Surrey because it proves that you have been working hard on the right things and taken it out onto the pitch. Now its about going on from there and getting runs consistently in the first few competitive game.”
Looking ahead to the three day game against Cardiff MCCU Head Coach Andy Hurry said: “This is a final opportunity for guys to get into the groove on the back of a very successful game againstSurrey. It is also an opportunity for us to rest our senior seam bowlers ahead of the Middlesex game and we will be looking to play good aggressive cricket and win the game.”
Two other non contracted players, James Burke and Andy Sutton have also been named in theSomerset team.
The full line up is: Arul Suppiah, Nick Compton, James Hildreth (captain), Pete Trego, Craig Meschede, James Regan (wkt), Max Waller, James Burke, George Dockrell, Gemaal Hussain and Andy Sutton.
