Last Eleven Men Standing Face Durham
James Hildreth will lead a team made up from Somerset’s only 11 available senior players in the LV=County Championship match at The Emirates Durham ICG, starting on Wednesday.
The county suffered yet another injury blow today when Jos Buttler split the webbing on a hand during fielding practice.
His absence means that no fewer that six first team players are ruled out of the Durham game by injury, while Nick Compton will also be missing on England Lions duty.
As well as Compton, Marcus Trescothick, Steve Kirby, Gemaal Hussain, Adam Dibble, Jamie Overton, Alfonso Thomas (Indian Premier League), Chris Jones (University), Jack Leach (University) and Buttler are unavailable.
Overton is awaiting the results of a scan on an elbow problem and if they are positive will be flown up for the Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Durham on Sunday.
His twin brother Craig will play in the Championship fixture. Alex Barrow makes his first appearance of the season and is likely to open the batting with Arul Suppiah.
Such is the extent of Somerset’s injury list that Academy Director Jason Kerr is set to fulfil the 12th man duties. Spinners George Dockrell and Max Waller will both play.
Director of Cricket Brian Rose said: “In all my time with Somerset, including as a player and captain, I have never known so many key players to be ruled out at the same time.
“We must have run over a black tiger, rather than a black cat, to cause such a crisis in personnel. I’m beginning to wonder what will happen next.
“I don’t think I’ll be taking my glasses to Durham. Otherwise I might be next in line for selection!
“Sometimes adversity brings out the best in a team and we have to hope that is the case over the next few days.”
