Somerset planning for 2013 season

The current season may have only just ended but at the County Ground plans are already being laid for the 2013 campaign.

With Brian Rose stepping down from his role as director of cricket after eight years in post, the Club is actively in the process of appointing a replacement, who they hope to have in place sometime in November.

In the interim however things are not standing still and a cricket management group has been appointed as head coach Andy Hurry explained: “Our main focus at the moment is to ensure that the club keeps going forward and there has been a cricket management group put together consisting of Vic Marks, Roy Kerslake, Guy Lavender, Marcus Trescothick and myself, to make sure that until a new director of cricket comes in that we are making good informed smart decisions to ensure that we keep going forward.”

Hurry went on: “The players may have gone off for a well earned break the cricket management group has been reflecting on another very competitive season for Somerset. We have also been reflecting on the positives and how we dealt with the adversities with so many injuries we have suffered this year and also looking at where we need to strengthen going forward as a Club.”

The head coach is relishing the prospect of a new man in charge of cricket at Somerset.

“With a new director coming in this is a very exciting time for the Club as we look to go forward in a new direction, with new fresh energy and we will be looking at things from a different angle.”

“From the Club’s perspective it’s important that we don’t stand still. We do reflect back and look constructively at how we can get better, building on what we do well.”

Hurry talked about recruitment for next season

“From a recruitment point of view we are looking at identifying areas where we need to strengthen for 2013. We are looking at the availability of our England players next season as well and making sure that we come up with a plan that enables us to be in a strong position next year to compete again in all three competitions.”

The management group has identified that they need to recruit a new batsman for 2013 and they are currently looking at the options available to them.

“One of the areas we are looking to strengthen is our batting and obviously with the overseas situation the way it was last year it is important we learn from that and try to get as much stability as possible throughout the season.”

“From the T20 perspective we still have the ambition to be successful and win that competition so we will be looking to recruit the highest profile player that we can who will add to the qualities and strengths that we have here already. We have got some big hitters and we have got some good bowling options available to us, so maybe we need to look and readdress what qualities and skills we require from our overseas player.”

Hurry added: “We need try to get the new director of cricket in place as soon as possible and embedded into what Somerset CCC is all about and embrace their fresh ideas to ensure that we are all working in one direction to make this Club have the most successful season they have had in recent history.”
