Ben Green impresses on England Under 19 debut.
Somerset Academy youngster Ben Green made a vital contribution with both bat and ball on his debut for England Under 19s in their only Test Match against Australia at the WACA in Perth earlier today.
After opting to bat first England found themselves in deep trouble at 32 for 5 before being rescued by a sixth wicket partnership of 84 between wicket-keeper Ryan Davies who made 61, and Aaron Thomason who hit 40.
Ben went to the wicket with the score on 116 and firstly added 19 for the eighth wicket with Brad Taylor (7) before putting on 29 for the last wicket with Saqib Mahmood (10) before England were all out for 172 in 62.1 overs.
The Somerset all rounder remained unbeaten at the end on 23, his runs comig off 91 balls and including two 4s.
When Australia batted ‘Greener’ came on second change and claimed the wicket of Australian skipper Jaron Morgan, caught by ‘keeper Davies for 19 before the hosts ended the day on 103 for 3 off 32 overs, still 69 runs behind.
Afterwards a clearly delighted Ben said: “After choosing to bat first unfortunately se didn’t get as many runs as we would have liked.
“However we came back strongly and had a good session after tea and bowled with good energy.”
“When I batted we were in a tricky situation so I was just trying to bat for as long as possible that’s why I faced as many balls as I did but its what was needed at the time. Then I thought I bowled quite well, maybe just a bit short and I got a wicket so overall I am pretty pleased with how things went for me personally.”
Reflecting on how things have gone so far for him on the tour Ben said: “I am enjoying the tour very much and training has gone well which has all been focused towards this Test Match.”
He added: “The squad was only announced at 9.30pm on April 4th so I spent the day wondering if I would be included and when I heard I was really chuffed.”
Steve Snell the Somerset Academy Director said: “I am delighted for him and his family that he has got the chance to play. He is two years younger than some of the others so it could have been thought that he was going there for the experience so full credit to him that he has got himself into the team.
“I know he bowled well in the warm up games and what a great opportunity this is for him to play in Test Match against Australia at the WACA so delighted for him.”
