Somerset 2nd XI beat Exeter University by 87 runs
The Somerset 2nd XI took on Exeter University in a 50 over pre-season friendly at Exeter CC today (Tuesday).
Exeter University won the toss and elected to field and made two early break-throughs as both Max Waller and James Regan departed to leave Somerset on 7 for 2.
Sam Underdown (42) and Ollie Sale (50) both played well and offered solid resistance but wickets continued to fall around them and Somerset were dismissed for 168 from 37.3 overs.
The Somerset bowlers then ripped through the Exeter batsmen. Tom Abell who was captaining the University today was trapped lbw by Josh Davey without scoring and his team mates didn’t fare much better as the opening four wickets fell for just 10 runs. Only three of the Exeter players made double figures as Somerset dismissed their opponents for just 81 to win by 87 runs in the 31st over. Davey was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4/17 from 8 overs. Max Waller also performed well with the ball taking 3/7 from 3.3 overs. Ollie Sale, George Dockrell and Liam Redrup also claimed a wicket each.
2nd XI Coach Steve Snell was pleased by the performance of his players: “I think it was a good toss to win and bowl first,” he said. “It was a bit damp and there was plenty in it for the seamers early on so all in all I was pretty pleased with out total. Our score was largely indebted to Ollie Sale who played fantastically and his footwork to the spinners was immaculate. Sam Underdown also played really well at the top of the order and showed glimpses of why he is in the England plans at under 17 level.”
