Winning start for Somerset Women
Somerset Women, who are sponsored by Somerset County Sports, got their 2015 season off to a flying start when they recorded a resounding 156 run victory over Ireland at Bath on Monday.
The hosts made up for the frustrations of their game the previous day at Staffordshire being called off because of the rain by putting in an impressive all round performance with both bat and ball.
After being put in on a slightly damp surface openers Gwenan Davies and Sophie Luff added 83 for the first wicket before Davies departed for 53- her maiden half century for the team.
Luff was then joined by her captain Anya Shrubsole and together they put on 66 for the second wicket before Luff departed for 65 and Shrubsole for 37.
Several later order batters also chipped in to help Somerset reach 223 for nine from their 50 overs.
When Ireland responded both Anya Shrubsole and Cassie Coombes claimed a wicket in their opening overs. The Somerset skipper then accounted for Joyce, who had scored a century against Worcestershire the previous day, when she was caught by Coombes at fine leg after which there was no way back for the visitors who were eventually bowled out for 69.
Anya Shrubsole ended with two for nine from her five overs, Lauren Shrubsole also had two for nine while Jenny Withers took two for 23.
Afterwards Paul Lawrence the Somerset coach said: “This was a great start to the season for the Somerset team. It was a good team performance which featured some good partnerships when we batted and some impressive bowling and fielding.”
Somerset Women are next in action when they host Devon at Taunton Vale on May 25th.
