Day to remember for Overton twins
Somerset supporters are still talking about the batting of the Overton twins on the third day of the LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at the County Ground.
The 21 year old twins, who hail from Northam near Bideford in North Devon came together when Somerset were 409 for nine in 90.5 overs.
In the course of the next 34 balls the former Academy duo annihilated the Yorkshire attack adding 76 runs before Jamie was out for 50, which included seven 4s and three 6s.
The Somerset innings closed on 485 with Craig remaining unbeaten on 31.
Cricket fans across the West Country have been searching their memories to think of a quicker 50 by a Somerset player and any other records that may have been broken.
Jamie’s brilliant 50 was- 4 . 6 . 4 . . 4 . 4 4 4 1 4 3 . 6 6 OUT
One thing that has emerged is that Jamie’s 18 ball half century is the quickest by a number 11 batsman in First Class cricket since the number of balls were recorded in 1983.
Jamie is also the leading number 11 batsman in First Class cricket in England for 2015- with 85 runs in the LV= County Championship, ahead of Michael Hobden of Sussex with 81.
The partnership of 74 in 35 balls is almost certainly the quickest for the 10th wicket for Somerset and certainly the highest for the County by twin brothers.
Reflecting on his 18 ball 50 Jamie said: “When I went out to bat I decided that if the ball was there to hit then I would hit it, although I don’t think I defended too many anyway! I just wanted to score runs as quick as I could to move the game forward a bit.”
Was it his best innings for the county so far?
“I have scored three 50s so far for Somerset but this one is right up there and the fewer balls you get them in the nicer it is.
“I think my biggest six so far for Somerset was the one that went over the Marcus Trescothick Stand and into the river. I just tried to watch the ball as hard as I could and hit it cleanly and then it went all the way.”
What about the challenge of hitting the ball over the new Somerset Pavilion?
“That certainly is a big hit and it will be interesting to see how Chris Gayle goes when he gets here.”
Jamie added: “For me its about trying to score runs as quick as I can and playing sensible cricket. I’d like to go up the order a little bit and if I keep on scoring runs there is no reason why they shouldn’t.”
