Hampshire 2nd’s make it two from two
Somerset Second XI were in action today when they played two T20 games against Hampshire at Taunton Vale. The visitors came away victorious after winning both matches to take the full four points.
Match 1: Hampshire won by nine wickets
Hampshire 2nd XI won the toss and elected to field first at the Vale in the first fixture which got underway at 12 noon. Hampshire were soon on top when they removed both openers inside four overs to leave Somerset struggling on 18 for two. Bartlett (35) coming in at three along with Barrow (21) helped to stabilise the innings but Somerset continued to loose wickets at regular intervals to reach 142 for seven from their twenty overs. Wheal was the pick of the Hampshire bowlers with economical figures for two for 13 from his four overs.
Opening the batting for Hampshire 2nd’s, Alsop (63*) and Gattling (54) got their innings off to a flyer as they powered to 100 in the twelfth over. Leach made the only breakthrough when he removed Gattling but Alsop remained and with support from Holland, they saw the visitors to a nine wicket victory with 2.1 overs to spare.
For his innings of 63* from 51 balls including eight four’s, Alsop was named man of the match.
Match 2: Hampshire won by three wickets
In the second twenty20 match of the day, Somerset won the toss and chose to bat first. Hampshire 2nd’s once again started strongly when they removed the top three batsman for 32 by the end of the fourth over. Scotland’s Josh Davey (60) provided some much needed resistance and helped the Somerset total to 175 for nine from twenty overs. Wheal once again proving useful on this track with figures of three for 19 from his three overs.
The Somerset bowlers faired better second time around and removed in-form Alsop for 14 taking the score onto 39 for one. Gattling however continued on from the first innings and was out caught and bowled by Max Waller for 80 off of just 35 balls. With Hampshire going strongly at 111 for three at the halfway stage, the Somerset bowlers needed to dig deep to bring this came through to its climax. Regular wickets continued to fall and it was all to play for going into the final over. Hampshire 2nd’s however held their nerve to see themselves through to their second victory of the day, this time by three wickets with just one ball remaining.
For his innings of 80 from 35 balls which included 10 four’s and four sixes, Gattling was named man of the match.
Following the results of this fixture, Somerset now sit sixth in the table having played 12 matches of which they have won six and lost six to leave them on 12. Hampshire are fifth in the table having also played 12 matches of which they have won six, lost four and had two no results. They move to 12 points but jump ahead of us in the table due to a higher run rate.
