Somerset Over 50s B team notch up first win of 2015
Somerset Over 50s B registered their first points of the season with a fine win over Wiltshire in their D&M Sports Southern Counties Seniors league match at Midsomer Norton CC on Thursday.
Wiltshire won the toss and elected to bat, clearly with an eye on what looked like a good wicket and fast outfield. Initially they made a steady start with Adrian Jeffrey playing some aggressive shots, particularly on the front foot.
However there was something there for the bowlers and in the ninth over with the score on 29, Jeffrey edged an away swinger from Rhys Thomas (Chew Magna) and was comfortably caught behind by Ed Martin (Kilve).
The next over, opener David Gale, who hadn’t had much of the strike, suddenly upped the run rate with some fine shots, the highlight a six over mid off that almost went into the changing rooms.
Gale and Paul Sore put on 23 until the latter was trapped lbw by Thomas, who ended with two for 16, and then after a positive 15 off 22 balls, Steve Jones was bowled by debutant left arm spinner Nigel Brock (Leigh-on-Mendip) to make it 73 for three.
Wiltshire progressed steadily and were looking relatively comfortable on 90 after 22 overs but Iain Locke (Chew Magna) was brought into the attack and bowled Mick Hunter in his first over. He dispatched Ian Doyle the same way with the third ball of his second over and they were wobbling on 103 for five.
The situation got worse six runs later when Gale tried to deposit Brock over the mid-on boundary but only found the safe hands of Everton Griffiths (Hinton Charterhouse) just inside the rope. His 55 had come off 64 balls and included eight 4s and one six.
By now wickets were falling regularly and Locke struck again, trapping Richard Mosdell lbw for a duck. Soon after Captain Simon Wells departed in similar fashion to Brock (3-17) to make it 115 for eight in the thirty forth over and then Raj Samant was bowled by Locke to give him outstanding figures of four for 15 off nine overs.
The tail wagged briefly with Andy Church and Mark Morris taking the score to 145 before Morris was run out by Clive Stitfall (Lodway) attempting a quick single. Church was left stranded on 23 with an over outstanding.
Somerset started steadily and openers Alistair Barr (Shapwick and Polden) and captain Julian Harvey (Leigh-on-Mendip) put on 55 in 19 overs before Harvey fell for 18, was unlucky to be given lbw after an edge onto his pads.
Barr was joined by Stitfall and the pair who had put on 165 together in the Wales game carried on where they had left off. Both played some attacking shots and the run rate accelerated steadily. Somerset comfortably reached their target without further loss after only 32.4 overs with Barr finishing on 62 and Stitfall a rapid 59 off 42 balls including eleven boundaries.
