Somerset Over 50s beat Isle of Wight
Opposing Captain Tony Long and Neil Morey started the rebuilding process and reached 55 before Morey was bowled by Hamblin. Trevor Mew made a quick 12 before he was caught by Dave Stephenson (Taunton Deane) off Hamblin and soon after M Bartlett was trapped lbw by Richard Reeves (Westlands Sports) to make it 84-5.
Long had been playing patiently but he was the next to go for 23 when Hamblin snaffled yet another fine catch off Chris Golding (North Curry) and IOW were in deep trouble when Simon Goldsmith was seventh down, caught by Mike Fear (Horrington) off Golding (2-49) with the score on 119.
Steve Lewis and Murray Jones restored some respectability with an eighth wicket stand of 34 but this was brought to an end by Hamblin when Jones was brilliantly caught by Fear at mid-off, unfortunately tearing his calf muscle in the process.
Lewis and Paul Biddecombe took the score to 180 when the latter fell lbw to Hamblin to give him four wickets and three catches out of the nine wickets to have fallen. IOW reached 197 off their 45 overs without further loss with Lewis finishing unbeaten on 38.
In response Somerset got off to a flyer with some brutal hitting from Dave Stephenson (Taunton Deane) and Graham Poulton (Midsomer Norton). The pair put on 104 before Poulton was caught by Ringer off Lewis for 64 off 58 balls including twelve boundaries.
However one run later Stephenson was run out for 38 so it fell to Alistair Barr (Shapwick and Polden) and Chris Brewer (Crowcombe) to steady the ship. Barr was bowled by Malcolm Gibson for 22 to make it 150-3 and by the time Brewer was lbw to Jones for 23 with the score on 161, the writing was pretty much on the wall.
The scene was set for a blistering assault by Scott who struck 38 off 30 balls including a sequence of 4,4,4,6 off consecutive balls from Jones and Somerset crossed the line with six wickets and 5.4 overs to spare.
