Somerset 2nd’s Win by 108 Runs
The Somerset 2nd’s were in action today when they played the Surrey 2nd’s in a trophy match which got underway at 11:00am. Despite this being an away fixture for the Somerset 2nd’s, Taunton Vale hosted this match on behalf of the Surrey 2nd.
Somerset named a strong eleven which was led by Alex Barrow who won the toss and chose to bat first.
Surrey made the early breakthrough when Regan was caught by Pope off the bowling of Selmes for a second ball duck. However Hose and Davey steadied the ship and made good use of the power play overs before the latter was out for 53 from just 61 balls. Captain Barrow was the next man in and along with Hose, saw the visitors though to the 200 mark in the 33rd over before Barrow was out for 36.
The Somerset batsman continued to fall but opener Hose held the innings together with a superb 141 from just 125 balls including 12 four’s and four sixes which saw the 2nd’s through to 321 for nine from their fifty overs. Dominic Sibley was the pick of the Surrey bowlers, taking five for 68 from his allocation of 10 overs.
With a steep total to chase, Surrey needed a good start but the top three batsman, including Vikram Solanki were all out within the first twenty overs with the score on 68 for three.
Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals and the home side were unable to maintain partnerships. They were all out for 213 in the 44th over handing victory to Somerset by 108 runs. The wickets were spread evenly for the visitors which Sale picking up three for 22. Dibble and Gamble had two wickets each and there was one a piece for Leach, Bartlett and Rouse.
Whilst Somerset take the two points from this fixture, the man of the match was Surrey’s Dominic Sibley for his outstanding bowling figures of five for 68.
Following this fixture, Surrey 2nd’s will take on the Somerset 2nd’s in a three day Championship fixture starting on Tuesday 30th June. Once again, Taunton Vale with host this fixture despite it being classed as an away fixture for the Somerset side.
