Win for Somerset over 50′s
Somerset Over 50′s overpowered Cornwall in their ECB County Championship match at Taunton Deane last Sunday.
Somerset won the toss and with increasingly bright conditions ahead decided to bat first on a good dry wicket. Openers Dave Stephenson (Taunton Deane) and Graham Poulton (Midsomer Norton) made a great start reaching 69 before Stephenson was bowled by Mike Hoban for 31.
Simon Hogg (Old Bristolians) came to the crease and runs flowed easily before he was bowled by John Dobson, also for 31, with the score on 138.
Mike Fear (Horrington) was bowled by Steve Mitchell for eight to make it 159-3 and Poulton finally departed when he was bowled by Dave Dunnett for an excellent 88 off 94 balls including 12 boundaries.
This left Somerset on 197-4 and a couple of wickets fell quickly with Chris Golding (North Curry) stumped by Andrew Jones off Dunnett and Ian Thomas (Brislington) lbw to Ian Bishop for a useful 19 off 27 balls.
However skipper Tony Scott (Brislington) made a quickfire unbeaten 44 off 35 balls including five fours and one six, while Richard Reeves (Westlands Sports) was bowled by Bishop (2-46), and Clive Hamblin (Frome) was bowled by Dunnett (3-50) as Somerset reached 266 for eight from their 45 overs.
In reply Cornwall reached 23 before Trevor Lee was bowled by Richard Reeves for 8. Soon after Reeves had his second wicket when he took a return catch from Jim McKenna.
Anton Luiten and Nigel Sanders started to rebuild the innings before Sanders was caught by Hamblin for 20 to become Reeves’ third wicket (3-33).
Jon Nance followed soon after for 5 when he was caught by Chris Brewer (Crowcombe) off the bowling of Hamblin to leave Cornwall on 71-4.
Andrew Jones came to the wicket at number 6 and he and Luiten took the score to 98 before the latter was run out by Scott for a patient 31.
Jones played positively but Steve Mitchell was the next to go for 13, courtesy of another catch for Hamblin off Scott to make it 123-6. Jones lost partners regularly with Bishop lbw to Scott (2-32) and Dunnett caught by Poulton off Golding to make it 150-8.
By the time Jones was caught by Reeves off Golding for a decent 43 off 55 balls it was pretty much all over and the match was wrapped up when Dobson hit a return catch to Golding for his third wicket (3-43).
Cornwall were all out for 179, losing by 87 runs with 6.3 overs remaining.
Somerset’s next ECB 50+ County Championship game is home to Wiltshire at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club on Sunday 7 June 2015, 1.00pm start.
