Hampshire v Somerset: NatWest T20 Blast preview
Somerset travel to the south coast tomorrow (Thursday) to play the penultimate NatWest T20 Blast match of the 2015 campaign against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl where the action starts at 6.30pm.
Whilst Somerset may not be able to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition, Director of Cricket Matt Maynard wants to end the NatWest T20 Blast campaign on a successful note as well as using the remaining two fixtures as a pointer to the future. Ahead of the match he said: “It is disappointing that we are out of the competition but we can now utilise these two games in preparation for the 50 over competition. We are giving youngsters like Tom Abell an opportunity to play and I am sure he will come through that with flying colours.”
Top order batsman Adam Hose is also included in the squad about which Matt said: “Adam is included for the T20s but that doesn’t mean he won’t also play in the 50 over comp as well. We are a little short on batting which I think has been obvious in recent weeks and this is a great opportunity. Elsewhere Jack Leach is back from his unfortunate injury and bowling as well as ever. Against Notts Seconds he scored a century and bowled them out which is what you want from a spinner.”
Jim Allenby has been named as captain about which Matt said: “Craig and Jamie Overton along with Lewis Gregory all got called up for the England ODIs so we are going to give them a go. Our initial thinking last winter was that Alfonso would captain in one-day cricket but that would mean that one of those guys would miss out which doesn’t seem fair. The Overton’s and Lewis, along with Tim Groenewald, will give us four bowlers who we will rotate so they will get plenty of experience and exposure.”
Adam Hose is excited about being called in to the squad days after signing his first contract with the County. “It is fantastic to be included in the squad,” he said. “To make my Somerset debut against Hampshire, where I played a lot of my cricket would be brilliant. My parents will be coming along to watch so I will be giving it my best!”
Hampshire are currently fourth in the South Group so will be looking for a victory to try to ensure that they seal their place in the last eight.
The full squad to travel to Hampshire is: Tom Abell, Jim Allenby (capt), Michael Bates (wkt), Tom Cooper, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth, Adam Hose, Jack Leach, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Peter Trego and Max Waller.
