Second’s excited ahead of County Ground game.
Somerset Seconds begin their only game of the season at the County Ground on Monday when they entertain Nottinghamshire in the three day match which starts at 11am.
Looking ahead to the game Steve Snell, the Second XI Coach and Academy Director said: “This is the only fixture that we have got at the County Ground this season and we said from the start that this was the game that a lot of the guys will be looking forward to as some of them don’t get the chance to play here too often.”
The Seconds have enjoyed a good run of form over the last couple of weeks, having beaten the MCC Young Cricketers in the Championship and also the Trophy in which they have now notched up two out of two.
Talking about their recent performances Steve said: “ We had an exciting team against the Young Cricketers with a fair few of the pro’s playing, a couple of Academy lads including Liam Redrup plus a couple of the players we have been having a serious look at- Bobby Gamble from Loughborough University and Adam Hose who has done well for us. Tom Lammomby an exciting young player from Devon was also making his debut at the age of 15.”
Somerset were too strong for a fairly inexperienced MCC side and won the match inside two days.
“One of the good things was that it was great to see Tom Cooper come in and score a century in the Seconds and he made batting look very simple. It was disappointing however that nobody else put their hand up and scored big runs which was the same as the previous week.
“This is something that the rest of the guys need to reflect on because when they get the opportunity in these games they need to go big.”
Steven will now be able to choose from a wider range of players with all of the Academy players on school holidays as he explained: “All of the Academy boys have now finished school so they will be available full time for us through the rest of the summer.”
One of these is Liam Redrup who took wickets in the MCC game about which Steve said: Liam has done well in club cricket for Taunton Deane when he has played club cricket this season and its great to see him transfer that into the Seconds game this week. He bowled in good areas, his action is a little bit different and against the right handed batter can either nip the ball in or move it away off the seam and I think that his uniqueness is something that we need to cherish because he is slightly different to the normal right arm bowlers and offers something different to the attack.”
Talking about the team’s form in the one day competitions Steve said: “We have won two out of two in the Trophy, after being really disappointed not to qualify for the T20 Finals Day- I thought that we had the players but we lost a couple of crucial games at the wrong time.
He added: “We have now beaten a strong Surrey side and the MCC last week in the Trophy so we are feeling confident that we can go just one better in this competition.”
The Somerset squad for the Second XI match against Notts at the County Ground on Monday is- Adam Hose, Eddie Byrom, Tom Cooper, Alex Barrow, James Regan, Tim Rouse, Sam Underdown, Ben Green, Adam Dibble, Ollie Sale, Bobby Gamble, Jack Leach and Liam Redrup.
