Annual Inclusion Day a Great Success
The first day of Somerset’s LV=County Championship against Worcestershire was the Club’s second Inclusive Cricket Day at the County Ground.
The day is a way of recognizing all of the fantastic achievements of disabled cricketers in the county and the support that the parents, carers and coaches provide along the way.
The County is proud to boast two very competitive disabled cricket teams in the Somerset Disabled Cricket Club, formed of players with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities and the Somerset Visually Impaired Cricket Club.
Both teams have had a great season with the SDCC finishing third in South West League, whilst the SVICC are reigning Twenty20 champions and currently sit fifth nationally with one game still to play.
The day was very well supported with over 90 attendees from the two county teams and a number of local community groups that have received cricket coaching from the Cricket Board’s coaches this year. For many this was their first opportunity to see a live game of first class cricket and what a fantastic day’s play it was.
During the lunch interval players from both the SDCC and the SVICC took to the outfield to give a demonstration of their cricketing skills.
Disability Development Officer and coach, Edgar Herridge, was thrilled by the reaction that of the Somerset crowd and said afterwards: “ The Somerset team always draws big crowds here at the County Ground and today was no exception. It was fantastic to see how enthralled they were during the demonstration and I was pleased to see our disabled cricketers receiving the warm applause that they so richly deserve when they completed their lap of the outfield.
“Somerset is extremely fortunate to have such strong and vibrant disability teams and it is great to be able to celebrate the teams’ successes with this event at the County Ground.
”The day has been a great success and I am already looking forward to next year’s Inclusive Cricket Day.”
