Match Preview: Somerset v Worcestershire
The Somerset players have all been training at the County Ground in final preparation the big matches that both the first and second team’s face on Friday.
The First XI host Worcestershire in a crucial LV=County Championship match, knowing that a victory will ease the threat of relegation.
Currently the County are sixth in the table with 120 points from 11 matches with a game in hand on seventh placed Worcestershire who have 112 from 12, and fifth placed Notts with 149, so a win will create a cushion between them and the three club’s below them.
Looking ahead to Friday’s encounter skipper Marcus Trescothick who hit 127 for the Seconds earlier in the week said: “We have still got a bit of work to do. It has been a while since we played red ball cricket so we need to get back into the groove pretty quickly.
“We are at the back end of the campaign with five games left and each one is as important at the next one so we have got to be on the money from ball one at 11 o’clock on Friday.”
“We have done well in our last three white ball games and that winning feeling is vital when you come into this stage of the season so we want to keep that going.”
The skipper added: “Hopefully we can take a lot from that and keep going forward.”
Director of cricket Matt Maynard said: “The boys are all looking forward to Friday’s match and the last three one day results has produced some confidence in the camp so everyone is quite excited to be returning to championship cricket at Taunton.”
Tom Abell, who was hit in the box at Leicestershire on Tuesday will undergo a fitness test in the morning.
The first team squad for Friday’s game is- Marcus Trescothick (captain), Tom Abell, Jim Allenby, Michael Bates (wkt), Tom Cooper, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Alfonso Thomas and Pete Trego.
Over at Taunton Vale in the semi final of the 50 Over Trophy competition Somerset Second XI host Durham where the game is set to get started at 10.30am.
