2nd XI: Somerset win dramatic Trophy clash
The Somerset Second XI took on Essex in the 50 over Trophy competition at Taunton Vale Today (Tuesday).
Essex won the toss and elected to bat.
The visitors started well and had reached 57 before Jaik Mickleburgh was bowled by Tim Rouse for 26. A century from Saf Imtiaz helped to take Essex past the 200 mark without further loss before he was bowled by George Dockrell for 100 with the score on 205. Greg Smith (82), Jack Sterland (48) and Geoff Dods (47*) also batted well to help ensure that the visitors posted a strong total of 311 for four from their 50 overs. Tim Rouse was the pick of the Somerset bowlers as he took two for 47 from nine overs whilst Dockrell and Alex Lilley also took a wicket each.
Somerset made a solid start to their run chase and openers Sam Underdown and Eddie Byrom put on 62 for the opening wicket before Underdown was bowled by Winslade for 23. Byrom and Rouse put on 93 for the second wicket before Byrom fell for 89. Rouse went on to make 68before he departed to leave Somerset on 216 for three.
Somerset kept the scoreboard ticking over but wickets also started to fall. However, Calvin Harrison and Bobby Gamble saw Somerset over the line with one ball to spare as the home side won by three wickets.
The two sides clash again tomorrow (Wednesday) when they begin a three-day Championship match.
