Marcus and Matt reflect on the Hampshire draw.
After spending almost two days in the field at the end of which his Somerset side had to settle for a 13 point draw from their LV=County Championship match against Hampshire, the captain Marcus Trescothick was in philosophical mood.
”It was a good pitch and obviously too good to try and force a result, with them not losing many wickets for the last two days.
“However it is what it is and we have been in this position before. We can’t do anything about it and we now have to move on and get down the Sussex.
“I think we have done a lot of good things over the course of this game. Obviously bowling them out on the first day was brilliant.
“To get the most out of the pitch and knocking them over and then getting the runs at the rate we did and the volume we did was pretty good. It was important to do this in order to give us the opportunity to win.
“We had pretty much two days to bowl them out again so it’s just disappointing that we were unable to do so.”
One of the real positives that has come out of this match has been the form of Jamie Overton, who took four for 37 in the first innings which he followed up with 19 overs for just 23 in the second.
Marcus said: “Over the course of this game I think that this is the best that Jamie Overton has been- he was really consistent with really solid pace and getting the ball in the right place.
“He got a couple of nicks which we dropped which goes against you, but he has really shown in the course of this game what sort of a prospect he can be on a pitch that wasn’t offering a lot for seamers. Every spell he bowled was bang on the money.”
Director of Cricket Matt Maynard said: “There have been times this season where the guys have not given 100% as a unit, but throughout the whole time they have been out in the field in this match they have given it their all.
“Everyone has given it 100% and their body language and attitude to try to take those 10 wickets was terrific.”
Matt added: “I am disappointed for the lads that they haven’t got that extra 11 points, but really pleased by the level of performance from them and if we can do that on a wicket that assists a little bit more then the results will certainly come.”
