Matt reflects at the end of a crucial day.
At the end of the second day of their LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire during which they gained sufficient bonus points to ensure that Somerset remain in Division One in 2016, Matt Maynard the Director of Cricket reflected on what has happened and gave an insight into what lies ahead.
“I think that what the guys have done for the last third of the season is to play some really good cricket. Our bonus points have been stronger in batting and we have bowled really well, and on occasions the weather has intervened, but our cricket has been good and solid.
“If we had played like that all year, then we would be in mid table. It’s not up there with Yorkshire but its fourth or fifth rather than being closer to eighth and ninth.”
Matt went on: “It’s a consistency of performance that has really impressed and excited me and since Jack Leach has come into the side we have changed the order.
“Tom and Marcus have scored runs in the second half of the season consistently, in fact Marcus has had a good year. We have been getting the basics right, we have fielded like a unit, we haven’t dropped many catches and we have managed to put pressure on the opposition.”
What did Matt see as the priorities looking towards next season.
“To be consistent means giving the likes of Jack and Lewis and the Overton lads cricket and that needs to be supplemented by a strong batting line up.
“Of the top six batters at the start of the season three have gone really well- Abell, Trescothick and Hildreth, who has been superb all season, and three have had not such good seasons, and I am including the wicket-keeping position in that, prior to Ronchi coming.
“Those are three places we need to improve on next year and we have signed Roelof van de Merwe as a middle order batsman who is more of a genuine all rounder these days and has got a double century under his belt in franchise cricket in South Africa, plus two hundreds.
“We are still looking for a top order overseas batsman and a wicket-keeper batsman also and if we can get those three signings and if the right character in terms of a left arm seamer comes along then that is something we may look at.
“This is not an immediate rush, with Meschede coming back into contention next season after his spell on loan with Glamorgan, and Davey available all year because his Scotland commitments will not interfere next year, our seam bowling / all rounder positions look fairly strong.
“What it just lacks is that bit of experience but that’s a double edged coin because the boys won’t get experience unless they play.
“Lets look to the future and lets give the guys exposure. They have certainly not let themselves nor the club down the way that they have performed this year.
“Look at the way that Jack Leach has performed in the current match, how Craig Overton has played the majority of the season, Jamie in bursts and he is getting better and better every game, and Lewis Gregory who is a fine talent with the ball. Do you sign people to stop these youngsters growth?- No I think that would be wrong.”
Matt added: “I think we have the armoury there but it is still going to be a scrap next year but I think we need to scrap sooner in the season because that seems to bring the best out of the lads and they have shown that under pressure in the back half of the season that they can perform.”
