Rob Turner congratulates Luke Ronchi on equalling his record
Somerset wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi equalled a Club record when he claimed seven catches in a First Class match during the LV= County Championship game against Hampshire at the County Ground, Taunton.
The record was originally set back in 2001 when Rob Turner took a septet of catches against Northamptonshire and we caught up with the former Somerset glove-man recently to reminisce about that record breaking game 14 years ago.
What does Rob remember about the match? “I remember that we won,” he said. “It was a very high scoring game in which we scored 650 in our first innings after bowling them out for a big score. It was a good game of cricket and very entertaining. I had no idea about any records or anything like that at the time to be honest and I’m pretty sure that I didn’t find out until the next day. It was really nice to take that many catches but at the end of the day I was just doing what I was there to do which was to catch the ball when the batsmen nicked it. I was just in the right place at the right time.
“To hold a record for the Club is brilliant. I still look back through the old year books and see things like partnerships that I’ve been involved with down the line and it brings back great memories. It’s great to look back on things like that and remember being a part of it.”
Looking back at the scorecard from the match Rob was surprised by an absentee from the Somerset line up during the game. “I took hundreds of catches in my career and most of them were off Andy Caddick,” he said. “He had that great shape and bounce and batters would regularly nick it through to me but Caddy didn’t play in this game! The majority of catches in this game came off Richard Johnson which was nice as we were good friends and he was my roommate whenever we played away from home.”
Following Luke Ronchi’s performance against Hampshire Rob said: “I’d like to congratulate Luke on taking seven catches. He took his chances really well. He’s a very good player and he hits the ball much harder than I used to!”
