Somerset Over 60′s Win County Championship
Congratulations to the Somerset Over 60’s have been crowned the Seevent County Champions for the first time after defeating Yorkshire in the final at Great Oakley CC in Northamptonshire.
Having defeated both Essex and local rivals Gloucestershire on their way to the final, Somerset lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a pitch which had been under cover for much of the previous two days after heavy rain.
Somerset lost Graham Poulton(Midsomer Norton CC) early on and had let offs for both Dave Stephenson (Taunton Deane CC) and Andy Ashfold (Burnham on Sea CC) before the pair set about the business in pursuit of a competitive total, however tight bowling from Yorkshire meant that Somerset were 73 for one at the half way stage.
Ashfold fell for a well-made 41 with the score on 105, after which Simon Hopkinson (Nailsea CC)joined Stephenson and the pair looked to push the innings on instantly increasing the scoring rate.
Having added 52 in quick time Stephenson was run out for a superb 74 but Hopkinson (38) firstly with Norman Botton and then Richard Newport (both Hinton Charterhouse) kept the run rate accelerating as Somerset reached 193 for seven from their 45 overs, 80 coming off the final 12 overs.
The Yorkshire reply got off to a solid start, with both Flintoff and Ivill adding 65 in 18 overs before Iain Locke (Chew Magna CC) trapped Ivill LBW for 30. Yorkshire looked well placed at 89 for one, before Somerset claimed four wickets for seven runs with two each for Mike Smith (Butleigh CC) (2-29) and Norman Botton.
Somerset were keeping the pressure on was with an excellent display in the field with Ashfold in particular showing great athleticism to save a number of certain boundaries.
Yorkshire were still in hunt at 142 for five with nne overs to go but a further wicket for Botton, (three for 33) plus two wickets from Stephenson’s spin who in tandem with captain Brian Brogden (Chew Magna CC) turned the screw to leave Somerset on the brink as the scoreboard read 153-9.
Brogden took the final wicket to secure the title with a 36 runs victory.
Brogden went on to collect the trophy and Dave Stephenson was named Man of the Match for his 74 and two for 14
