Somerset planning for floodlights at County Ground
With the new Somerset Pavilion nearing completion Somerset County Cricket Club have announced the next stages in the redevelopment of the County Ground, that includes a new stand and scoreboard in time for the 2017 season on the Priory Bridge side and beyond that the installation of floodlights.
Chief Executive Guy Lavender said: “As soon as the season is over we will start a drainage programme on the ground to get it up to the requirements for international cricket. This will involve the installation of a full drainage and irrigation system into the ground.
“It is a big piece of work and hopefully we will get some reasonable weather to enable us to complete the process by Christmas.”
Looking further ahead the Chief Executive said: “The plans for the winter of 2016 focus on the area between the Colin Atkinson and the Andy Caddick Pavilion – the north east corner of the ground. Next winter we intend at this stage, to replace the old scoreboard, extend the boundary slightly and install a new spectator stand.”
In addition, there are a number of winter projects to complete including the installation of better CCTV coverage.
The Chief Executive added, “The next big project after this is likely to be floodlights which are an important part of international cricket so we are starting to work up the process for a planning submission. To that end, on the 23rd Sep, we are hosting a public event to allow anyone that is interested to come and hear what we have in mind in advance of a planning submission. This will take place in the Colin Atkinson Pavilion starting at 7pm and all are welcome.
“Inevitably as we approach the latter stages of the Somerset Pavilion there have been a couple of slight delays so we are expecting the new build to be finished in mid-October.
“Unfortunately, we will not be in a position to open the Somerset Pavilion for tours during the Warwickshire match. As I am sure Members will appreciate, it is still a building site and is not safe for general entry for large numbers.
“As soon as we have the building handed over, we will open up the facility as quickly as we can for Members to come and look around.”
“We will of course keep Members fully informed and updated regarding the progress of all of these developments.”
