Somerset v Hampshire: Pre-match
Somerset host Hampshire in a four-day LV= County Championship match at the County Ground starting tomorrow (Wednesday),with both sides in need of a win to help maintain their First Division status.
The last time that Somerset played at Taunton the team dominated the two days of play that were possible against Worcestershire before the rain came down and put paid to any chance of a result.
Looking ahead to the match Director of Cricket Matt Maynard said: “It is important for us to go out and replicate the way that we played against Worcestershire. In that game we batted as well as we have done all year and we got those crucial partnerships working. I thought that James Hildreth and Pete Trego alongside Marcus Trescothick, Tom Cooper and Jim Allenby were superb in that game.
“With the ball, the way that Jamie and Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory started was as well as they have bowled all year. It would have given them confidence and we will be looking to do the same against Hampshire. The wicket will undoubtedly spin and that will bring Jack Leach into the game later on.”
Matt added: “We have had two good days of preparation, we are very much looking forward to it and we are raring to go now.”
Ahead of the match all rounder Pete Trego said: “This is a vital match for us in the context of the season. It has panned out that we are in a bit of a dog fight so the next four day’s points are crucial and we need to be right on our game because they are in the same boat. We are all fighting for our lives.”
Pete went on: :”We had a good game down at the Rose Bowl and we played some good cricket on a challenging wicket. It’s going to be four hard days and may the best team win. Both teams have got some quality performers, but its that time of year when the big players have to stand up and put some big performances in.”
Somerset have added Alex Barrow, who has scored heavily for the Second XI and Jamie Overton to the squad for this match.
The full squad is: Marcus Trescothick (capt), Tom Abell, Jim Allenby, Alex Barrow, Tom Cooper, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Luke Ronchi and Pete Trego.
Please note that play will get underway at 10:30am each day.
