Somerset Women on the verge of promotion
Somerset Women’s Cricket team are on the verge of promotion to Division One and can confirm their top flight status at the County Ground, Taunton on Sunday when they play Wales in a 50 over match that gets underway at 11am.
For the last couple of seasons Somerset have just missed out on promotion, and this disappointment will make the team even more determined to succeed this year.
Vice captain Sophie Luff has led the side on a number of occasions in the absence of Anya Shrubsole who has been on England Ashes duty. The top order batter has also enjoyed considerable success in helping Lympsham gain promotion to Division Two of the Somerset League, and warmed up for Sunday’s showdown with a career best unbeaten 141 for Bath Women in their final match of the season against Hursley Park.
The 21 year old, who is sponsored by Somerset County Sports/Sabre Cricket and has just completed her studies at Cardiff University, has scored three centuries in 2015 and was delighted to set her highest score: ““It’s a fantastic achievement and one I will remember for a long time,” she said. “I had to be patient at the start of my innings but once I reached 50, I was able to accelerate and to bring up my century in front of a great crowd at Bath was special, but to go beyond that, well I guess it was just one of those days where everything goes your way.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s game the vice captain said: “ It’s just a fantastic opportunity for us to finish the season unbeaten in the 50 over format and gain promotion! We’ve been playing some great cricket in this format and it’s just about going out at the County Ground and doing exactly the same. “Anya Shrubsole comes back to captain and it’s always a massive advantage having an international come back into your side. Wales are sitting mid table at the moment and we know we can’t take them lightly. They’ve just come off the back of a very close win against Durham and will be keen to finish their season on a high too.”
Somerset welcome back Captain Anya Shrubsole from England duty, where she has enjoyed huge success and the skipper has been quick to praise Luff: “Sophie has been brilliant,” she said. “She is a really big player for us but the whole team has been really good this year to be honest. It’s been a busy summer and we’ve got one more game to go but what a great way to end the year with a game at the County Ground. We usually have one game a season here and it’s always nice to play at such a great venue. It means a lot to all of us so hopefully we can put on a good show.”
Anya continued: “It’s been a really good season and it would be great to clinch promotion after having gone so close in the past. We’ve been gutted to miss out in the last couple of years and it would be really nice to see a good crowd supporting us on Sunday.”
Entry and parking is free and refreshments will be available all day so anybody who wants to enjoy a day of cricket this weekend should come along to the County Ground on Sunday and help cheer the Somerset team to promotion!
