Big Bike Ride arrives at the County Ground.
The Big Bike Ride Two reached the County Ground in Taunton late this afternoon when the riders completed the second leg of the five day trip during which they will cover 400 miles on their gruelling journey between Truro and the Kia Oval.
Around 75 riders, including some of the biggest names from the world of cricket are undertaking the trip to help raise money for the Professional Cricketers’ Association Benevolent Fund and the Tom Maynard Trust.
After climbing off his cycle Marcus Trescothick said: ” We are two days into the bike ride now and so far its all going pretty well. Yesterday we had 90 odd miles with quite a few hills as we came out of Cornwall.
“Today we have ridden 65 miles but there have been a lot of hills all over Exmoor and it has been very interesting to say the least.
“Getting back onto the saddle for the start of the second day is never easy but once we got going it went fairly well for me thankfully.
Looking ahead Marcus said: “There are three more days to go and on Sunday we have got 103 miles to cover from here down to Southampton which is going to be a tough. We have to ride up King Alfred Hill which is pretty steep and the worst hill of the trip so I’m not looking forward to that too much.
“There has been a great atmosphere on the ride and along the way we chat amongst each other and it has been good fun. You work hard together and then sit down and have a beer and relax in the evening.
“We have had good support along the way and certainly coming into Taunton people had turned out to cheer us which always helps spur you on.
The Somerset captain added: “Most of the money we have raised for the PCA Benevolent Fund and the Tom Maynard Trust has come in on-line so hopefully anyone who wants to make a donation will do so as there is still a way to go before we reach our target.”
The riders will stay overnight in Taunton before setting off on day three at 7am heading for Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl.
Monday’s stage will see the riders go from Hampshire to Sussex’s TheBrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground at Hove with the final leg from Hove to the Kia Oval on Tuesday.
Amongst those who completed today’s leg were Somerset Club Captain Marcus Trescothick, Director of Cricket Matt Maynard, Chief Executive Guy Lavender, Head Groundsman Simon Lee and Chairman Andy Nash.
