Jack settling in nicely at Wanneroo
Somerset left arm spinner Jack Leach is enjoying his time playing Grade A cricket for Wanneroo CC in Western Australia this winter.
As well as settling in nicely the 24 year old lined up alongside a familiar face at the weekend as he explains: “We had Mitchell Johnson playing for us last Saturday. It was an amazing experience to see how someone at the next level goes about his business. He bowled the quickest I’ve ever seen anyone bowl and he swung it late too. I think he’s in a pretty good place for the test series against Luke Ronchi and New Zealand so I’ve been sure to let ‘Ronchs’ know! Also he gave me a lot of time just to talk bowling and cricket which was really kind of him.”
Reflecting on his time away from home so far Jack said: “ Time has flown by since I have been in Perth and I struggle to believe that I’ve been here for almost a month. I’ve settled in really well at the club and they have made me feel very welcome which I really appreciate. It is young team with a lot of potential, which is exciting to be involved in.
“The wicket is very flat at Wanneroo which makes it a really great challenge for my bowling but I’ve got off to a good start in the one day games and looking forward to getting the two day stuff started soon.”
What has he been getting up to whilst he’s been down under? “During the week I am training hard with Stew Walters on my game,” he said. “He has helped me a lot with my batting and I’m really excited about where that area of my game is going. There are six of us working with Stew, including Liam Livingstone from Lancashire, Dom Sibley and Anish Kapil from Surrey, and obviously my good mate Abes! (Tom Abell). We have an outdoor net session every Wednesday with a fitness session. Then I have three individual sessions a week with Stew. In addition to which there’s club training on a Tuesday and a Thursday so it means there is plenty of opportunity to train. We also have quality gym facilities to use which is important so we can keep Daz (Somerset Head of Strength & Conditioning Darren Veness) happy!”
