3 days to go until Membership launch
We have reached number three in our countdown of your memorable moments of 2015 which means that there are just three days to go until Membership for 2016 goes on sale!
Somerset wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi equalled a Club record when he claimed seven catches during Hampshire’s first innings at the County Ground on Wednesday September 9th.
The 34 year old New Zealander, who earlier in the season had played in the NatWest T20 Blast for Somerset, returned to play a handful of LV= County Championship matches at the end of the campaign.
The glove-man said he was totally unaware that he had equalled the record set by Rob Turner back in 2001,until he heard it announced over the public address system while he was out in the middle. “I’ve never claimed seven catches behind the wicket in an innings before,” he said. “I think my previous best was six with a stumping. It was a good day from a personal point of view with me getting the chances, but generally it was a good day for everyone involved. It’s not bad as home Championship debuts go! That’s the way that you would want it to go.”
Rob Turner, the man whose record Luke equaled, was quick to praise the New Zealander. ““I’d like to congratulate Luke on taking seven catches,” he said. “He took his chances really well. He’s a very good player and he hits the ball much harder than I used to!”
Does Rob remember much about setting the record against Northamptonshire in 2001? “I had no idea about any records or anything like that at the time to be honest,” he said. “I’m pretty sure that I didn’t find out until the next day. It was really nice to take that many catches but at the end of the day I was just doing what I was there to do which was to catch the ball when the batsmen nicked it. I was just in the right place at the right time. To hold a record for the Club is brilliant. I still look back through the old year books and see things like partnerships that I’ve been involved with down the line and it brings back great memories. It’s great to look back on things like that and remember being a part of it.”
