4 days to go until Membership launch
There are now just four days to go until we launch Membership for the 2016 season and as part of the build up we are continuing to look back the highlights that you have voted for as the best moments of 2015.
Somerset fans are still talking about the last wicket partnership of 76 between the Overton twins against Yorkshire on the third day of our LV=County Championship match at the County Ground in late May.
After being put in, Yorkshire scored 438 all out with Pete Trego taking four for 73 and Craig Overton three for 74.
In reply openers Tom Abell and Marcus Trescothick put on 84 before the Somerset Captain was out for 56. Tom and Johann Myburgh took the total onto 163 before the young opener was out for 62, shortly after which Johann went for 41.
James Hildreth continued with his fine form and went to 82 before he was out after adding 129 for the fourth wicket with Tom Cooper, who made 99.
The 21 year old twins, who hail from Northam near Bideford in North Devon, came together when Somerset were 409 for nine in 90.5 overs. In the course of the next 34 balls the former Academy duo annihilated the Yorkshire attack adding 76 runs before Jamie was out for 50, which included seven 4s and three 6s.
The Somerset innings closed on 485 with Craig remaining unbeaten on 31.
Jamie’s brilliant 18 ball half century was the quickest by a number 11 batsman in first class cricket since the number of balls were recorded in 1983. The partnership of 74 in 35 balls is almost certainly the quickest for the 10th wicket for Somerset and certainly the highest for the county by twin brothers.
Determined not to be outdone, Craig hit four boundaries off an over from Liam Plunkett, which prompted his brother to do the same from the opposite end.
Regarding his innings Jamie said: “It was nice to have a bit of fun out there and to have Craig with me helped and it was nice to get some runs with him. It happened up at Edgbaston last season when batted together and I got a 50 in no time.”
Craig said: “I wasn’t surprised to see Jamie hitting it to all parts. After Coops got out on 99 I asked Jamie how he was going to play and he said he was going to have a go from the start. I know what he can do when he’s like that and it showed today. He struck it cleanly and played sensible shots and got us into a good position. Its great to be batting with him because when he gets going, so do I.
Second time round Yorkshire scored 419 all out with Craig taking three for 73 off 24 overs. Chasing an unlikely 373 Somerset reached six for one as the game ended in a draw.
Regarding the Overton’s performances Marcus Trescothick said: “We have seen them a few times before and its good when they get together. They clearly enjoy batting together and they also bowled well together in partnership. We know how good a prospect they are with both bat and ball.”
