Tim backs new signing to excel
Tim Groenewald is back training at the County Ground.
The 31 year old played in nine County Championship matches and took 30 wickets at an average of 32.53 in 2015. Reflecting on his season the right arm medium pacer said: “There was a period of the season where I was happy with how things went for me, but then towards the back end I began to struggle to string games together and get my rhythm right. However, from a numbers point of view it was ok for me and a lot better than 2014. I showed glimpses of what I can do so hopefully going forward I can learn from that and get better next season.”
One of Tim’s most memorable wickets last season was the caught and bowled chance he hung on to from Will Gidman in the match against Nottinghamshire at the County Ground, which Somerset won. “It’s always good to hold on to chances that come back to you when you are bowling,” he said. “When you take it yourself you don’t have to rely on other people to catch them. I just grabbed hold of it and it was just one of those chances I saw early enough and managed to get to.”
Tim is also pleased to be able to play his part in helping some of the younger players on the staff as he explained: “We have got a really good young group of players and there are a few good young bowlers among them. Having watched them since I arrived here back in 2014 I can see that they are all improving and gaining more experience which will stand the Club in good stead going forward. Several of the younger players have got winters involved with England Development teams so hopefully, when they come back to us at the start of the 2016 season they will hit the ground running.”
How is Tim spending his winter? “We have got a second baby due any day now, after which I have got five or six weeks training at the County Ground before heading off to South Africa to get some cricket in and train outdoors plus catch up with the family. I will be returning to Taunton in mid February to join up with the guys for three weeks before we go off to Spain for our pre-season training camp.”
Tim played alongside Somerset’s new overseas signing Chris Rogers when they were both at Derbyshire so how does he think the Australian Test Match batsman will fit in at the County Ground?
“Chris is a really good guy,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again. He is a real quality player and a great guy who will be brilliant to have in the changing room here at Somerset. I think that all of the guys, especially the younger ones, will learn a lot from him. Chris has got a lot of ideas and he looks to help the younger guys a lot, so he will be good value for this team and will certainly churn out runs.”
Looking ahead to the 2016 season Tim said: “Personally I will be looking to build upon this year and get better. There were a few performances I put in that I was happy with so I want to be more consistent. Of course there are going to be days where you aren’t quite up to your game, so it’s trying to limit them to as few as possible whilst trying to be more consistent in my performances and stringing a few more good games together.”
Regarding Somerset in 2016 Tim said: “We have had a year with Matt and all of the younger players will be one year older in terms of experience, so I think that we have got to hit the ground running and get off to a good start. We didn’t this year which set us back in a big way because we were always playing catch up. If we can get off to a good start in April and get a few points in the bag then we will be ok.”
