Ben Green impressing in Sri Lanka
Somerset Academy player Ben Green recorded an impressive performance for the England U-19′s in their 1st Youth ODI against India on Friday, but could not see his team to victory as India won the match by 86 runs.
18-year-old Green, who plays his cricket for Exeter CC and has performed well for the Somerset 2nd XI this season, was given the responsibility of opening the bowling and returned impressive figures of three for 28 from his seven overs. With the bat, Green was left stranded on 23 not out from 21 deliveries as wickets continued to fall around him.
After the match Ben said: “I’m obviously disappointed to have lost the game and it has put us in a tricky situation to qualify for the final of the tournament. I’m pleased with how I bowled and batted. I tried to keep things simple and did not have to change from the plans I set when bowling”
Green is yet to be dismissed on the tour after scoring an unbeaten 24 in the only warm-up match, and said that the conditions are very different to those in Taunton. “It is extremely hot and humid as everyone knows which makes playing cricket a lot harder and is very physically draining. I feel like I have started to acclimatise but don’t think I could ever fully get used to this weather!”
“I was very happy to be given the opportunity to open the bowling and it gave me the feeling that I was being fully backed by the coaches. Obviously I would love to take the new ball moving forward but am willing to be adaptable to be able to bowl in a number of roles for the team”
The next match in the series is tomorrow (Monday) morning as the U-19′s prepare for the World Cup, which is taking place in Bangladesh starting late January. Ben Green, as well as fellow Somerset players George Bartlett and Ryan Davies, will all be looking to be involved.
