The boys are back at the County Ground
All of the locally based Somerset players returned to training at the County Ground, Taunton on Monday morning.
For Marcus Trescothick, who celebrated a milestone birthday on Christmas Day, this is the 24th year that he has returned to training following the festive break.
Despite being the senior player on the staff, Marcus has lost none of his hunger and enthusiasm for the game that has been his life since 1993. “I love Christmas and the time spent together with my family,” he said. “But I always enjoy getting back to training and preparing for another cricket season.”
He added: “I think that this will be my 24th season but I am looking forward to it just as much as if it was my first. I can’t wait for it to get started.”
At the opposite end of the scale was 19 year old paceman Liam Redrup, currently on a Somerset Scholarship, who was reporting back after Christmas for the first time.
The former Academy youngster, who spent a fortnight in Nepal with the MCC touring party back in the autumn, said: “Yes I enjoyed the holiday but it was good to get back into the gym and training in the Centre of Excellence to shake off the excesses of Christmas.”
Liam added: “It felt quite tough returning after nearly three weeks off but I have soon got back into it and I am certainly a lot fitter than when I first started my winter training back in November.”
