Somerset Seconds just miss out to Middlesex
At the end of an exciting final day to the Second XI Championship match against their Middlesex counterparts Somerset lost out by three wickets.
Resuming this morning on 199 for three, Johann Myburgh who started unbeaten on 74 went onto score 112 before he was out and Somerset declared on 253 for six, his runs coming off 129 balls with 11 fours and three 6s.
When Middlesex batted for a second time needing 407 for victory Bobby Gamble made the breakthrough when he claimed the first wicket with the score on 69 and after 25 overs the visitors had moved onto 90 for one.
The Middlesex second wicket pair of Eskinazi and Patel added 87 together before Josh Davey bowled the former for 68, with the total on 156, and by the time that tea was taken Middlesex had moved onto 215 without further still needing to score 193 to win off the 34 overs remaining,
Despite the best efforts of the home bowlers Middlesex eventually chased down their total thanks to a 120 from Higgins as they reached 409 for seven.
Josh Davey ended with three for 78 while Roelof van der Merwe claimed two for 87.
Day Two: Report
Middlesex resumed on seven without loss on day two of the Second XI Championship match at the Cooper Associates County Ground but Somerset didn’t have to wait too long for a breakthrough as Sam Grant took three early wickets to leave the visitors on 15 for three.
40 from Ryan Higgins, 47 from James Fuller and 83 not out from Nathan Sowter steered the visitors towards a decent total but four wickets from Liam Redrup ensured that Middlesex were all out for 260 in reply to Somerset’s 414.
Redrup was the pick of the Somerset attack and finished with four for 79 whilst Grant claimed three for 31. Bobby Gamble took two for 51 and the other wicket taker was Roelof van der Merwe.
Batting for the second time Somerset suffered an early blow when Adam Hose was dismissed for two but 54 from Alex Barrow, a rapid 34 from van der Merwe and 74 not out from Johann Myburgh ensured that the home side were in a strong position as they closed day two on 199 for three, a lead of 353.
Day One: Report
Middlesex won the toss and elected to field.
Somerset openers Alex Barrow and Adam Hose put on 58 for the opening wicket before Barrow was dismissed for 21. Hose was then joined in the middle by Johann Myburgh who reached 15 before departing with the score on 84. Roelof van der Merwe (8) was also dismissed before lunch but Hose remained unbeaten on 46 at the interval as Somerset reached the break on 114 for three.
After the break Hose went on to make 82 whilst Josh Davey added 31 and Michael Leask 30 as Somerset reached tea on 300 for six. Tom Banton was 91 not out.
In the final session of the day Banton went on to make 96 whilst Max Waller added a brisk 56 to ensure that Somerset posted a solid total of 414 all out. The visiting openers survived the remaining eight overs of the day and reached the close on seven without loss.
