Mahela enjoying his time at Somerset
Sri Lankan master batsman Mahela Jayawardene looked in good form on Sunday when he hit an unbeaten 45 off 32 balls to help see Somerset to a six wicket victory over Hampshire in the NatWest T20 Blast.
Mahela’s innings was a high class affair and included six elegantly executed fours and one effortless six.
After he stepped off the field he was one of the first to return outside to meet the supporters, sign autographs and pose for selfies.
The good news for Somerset fans is that Mahela is available to play for the rest of our NatWest T20 Blast matches.
After he had finished meeting the fans Mahela said: “I really enjoyed my innings today, but Chris did all the hard work! With the rain around it was important for me that we didn’t lose too many wickets. I just played myself in and once Chris got out I took over. The last time I played here I didn’t get runs so it was brilliant today. I really enjoyed the crowds and they certainly do get behind the team, so it’s a fantastic feeling.”
“This is another win at home so now we just need to continue to do that as well as winning a few games on the road.”
The next game for Somerset sees the squad travelling to Lord’s on Thursday to take on Middlesex in the NatWest T20 Blast. “Lord’s is a great place to play cricket,” Mahela said. “I am really looking forward to it. We just need to keep the momentum going and need to play some good cricket.”
The Sri Lankan maestro added: “I’m loving playing cricket here in Taunton for Somerset. It’s a good wicket, a great atmosphere and a great crowd. I am really enjoying it.”
