Matt full of praise for debutants
Somerset took the opportunity to give First Class debut’s to four of our younger players in the recent Tourist Match against Pakistan.
New signing Paul van Meekeren, a 23 year old paceman from Holland showed that he has got plenty to offer when he claimed three wickets after opening the bowling in the tourists first innings.
20 year old batsman Tim Rouse, who is on a Somerset Scholarship after graduating through the Academy, hit an impressive 41 off 94 deliveries in the second innings after being struck in the head by Mohammad Amir when he was on eight.
Dom Bess, an 18 year old off spinner who is also a former Academy graduate now on a Somerset Scholarship, bowled aggressively and in the second innings scored a crucial 21 off 36 balls after spending almost an hour at the crease.
Opening bat Adam Hose has already showed what he is capable of in white ball cricket but this was his first opportunity in First Class cricket for Somerset. Against the returning Mohammad Amir the 23 year old spent over half an hour at the wicket in the first innings and in the second helped Trescothick put on 47 after more than three quarters of an hour out in the middle.
At the end of the game Matt Maynard shared his thoughts on each of the first class debutants. “Adam Hose probably didn’t score as many runs as he would have liked,” he said. “But he spent quite a long time out in the middle facing a top class attack and in the field I don’t think that there was an easy single to him throughout the match and that part of his game has been terrific.
“Tim Rouse was out to a decentish ball in the first innings and then in second played a really nice innings on the back of his 175 for the Seconds and showed his composure. He proved that he can make it at this level, which was really pleasing. He has got an excellent pair of hands and took a couple of great catches so it was a really good contribution to the game from Tim.
“I thought Paul van Meekeren bowled an excellent opening spell. I saw him last week for the Seconds and he has really impressed me in practice and we gave him the game. He didn’t disappoint us and I thought that he was superb with that new rock.
“Young Dom Bess has got some fight about him and he showed that with the bat towards the end when he fought his way through. He has got some character and after the second ball he bowled he was on at the umpire and he’s tenacious which suggests that he has got the right attributes. What he will learn is that when a batsman comes after you take the pace of the ball. He is a quick learner and hungry to succeed.”
