Van Meekeren happy with debut performance
New signing Paul van Meekeren had a debut to remember yesterday.
The 23 year old paceman, who has played in two ODI’s for the Netherlands, took two for 54 on the first day of Somerset’s Tourist Match with Pakistan at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
Van Meekeren has signed for Somerset until the end of the season and after his first appearance for the County he said: “It was a very special experience. It has always been a dream to join an English county, so to sign and get straight into the team is a special occasion and picking up two wickets is always nice. It was a good day all round so I’m happy. After the World Cup I joined Bennell Hill Cricket Club (Newcastle) and they have been very good to me by allowing me to play in some Second XI games for Somerset which has brought me here, so I’m very grateful.”
“I would never have expected to play in the same team as Trescothick and Trego and the other big names, but I played for the Seconds with Marcus and Chris Rogers recently so that helped. To walk in to a dressing room like this and see guys like Josh Davey and Roelof van der Merwe who I know helps you to settle in and now I look forward to the next three months.”
Paul added: “Ten years ago I was here in Taunton playing at the Kings College Festival for the Under 12′s and 13′s and now I am up with the big guys and I’m delighted to be here.”
After securing Paul’s services Somerset Director of Cricket Matt Maynard said: “Paul is a player that we have been monitoring for a little while. We have trialed a few bowlers this summer but Paul has really been the standout performer and he got a five-for in the Second XI game against Kent recently.
“Both Chris Rogers and Marcus Trescothick were playing in that game and they both spoke highly of his attributes. I got to see him at Taunton Vale earlier this week and he impressed me so he has agreed a short term contract with us until the end of the season. I know that we beat off opposition from other counties and he has got a real opportunity in this game to show what he is capable of. He is six feet four, gets good bounce and predominantly swings the ball away from the right hander. I know that Jason Kerr is excited about him as a prospect.”
