Bess, Green and Bartlett in England U19 Squad
Somerset Youngsters Dom Bess, Ben Green and George Bartlett have all been included in the England Under 19 squad for the Royal London One-Day Series against Sri Lanka, which starts at Wormsley next Wednesday.
Offspinning allrounder Bess made his Somerset debut against Pakistan last month, whilst Bartlett impressed for the England Under 19′s recently, making 131 in a Test against Sri Lanka. Ben Green also made his Somerset debut recently in the NatWest T20 Blast match at Hampshire and signed a professional contract with the Club this week.
Following the squad announcement Somerset Director of Cricket Matt Maynard said: “To have three players in this squad just goes to show the exceptional standard of young talent that we have here at Somerset. Everyone at the County has very high hopes for these three players who have once again impressed this year. George showed exactly what he is all about in the recent England Under 19 match whilst Dom and Ben have been rewarded for their form for the Second XI this year by making their First XI debuts. I have no doubt that, if selected, all three will perform well.”
Bess had not been due to link up with the squad until the weekend, but he received an early call ahead of the second four-day game in Northampton this week, to provide spinning cover for Surrey’s Amar Virdi. Head of England Development Programme and former Somerset Head Coach Andy Hurry has praised Bess for making a positive impact on the squad. “We were pleased to welcome Dom to the squad,” he said. “He provided a real injection of energy when he came on to the field which is exactly what you’re looking for from your 12thman.
“Joining us early has also given him the opportunity to do some work in the nets, and he joined the other spinner in our squad Amar Virdi in a session with Monty Panesar on Wednesday. He’s made an excellent opening impression, and we’re also looking forward to welcoming Ben Green to the squad for our one-day matches next week.”
