Second XI Trophy: Somerset win by five wickets
Following yesterday’s Second XI Championship draw, Somerset and Essex locked horns once again today in the 50-over Trophy at Halstead, where the action got underway at 11am.
Somerset won the toss and elected field.
Ollie Sale made an early breakthrough as Aaron Nijjar was caught by Max Waller with the score on 22. A 77 run partnership between Feroze Khushi and Liam Gough took the score to 99 before the former was caught behind by Alex Barrow off the bowling of Liam Redrup. Gough then followed shortly after as he was dismissed by the same combination.
Max Waller then ran out Kishen Velani to leave Essex on 118 for four and then two quick wickets from Kim Leverock meant that the home side were reduced to 156 for six. However, 80 from Callum Taylor enabled Essex to post a total of 229 all out from 48.4 overs.
The Somerset reply started strongly and openers Adam Hose and Tim Rouse put on 50 for the first wicket.
Alex Barrow made a very useful 44 but it was Tom Abell who was the star for the visitors as he scored 89 not out as Somerset reached their target in the 43rd over to win by five wickets.
