Somerset extend contracts of three first team players
Somerset are delighted to announce that Tim Groenewald, Roelof van der Merwe and Johann Myburgh have all both signed extensions to their current contracts.
Tim is enjoying his best season to date since joining Somerset from Derbyshire in 2014. In the Specsavers County Championship he has taken 33 wickets at 27.48 whilst in the Royal London One-Day Cup he took 15 wickets at 24.40 as well as playing a number of key innings in both formats.
Johann, who also joined Somerset in 2014 has enjoyed a very successful season and currently tops Somerset’s Specsavers County Championship batting averages with 234 runs at 58.50, whilst in the Royal London One-Day Cup he averaged 40 from his seven matches.
Roelof has shown just how versatile an all round cricketer he is in all formats since returning to Somerset at the start of this season. He has proven himself to be a genuine three dimensional cricketer, topping the NatWest T20 Blast batting averages, scoring a century in the Specsavers County Championship and taking wickets in all formats, as well as taking some stunning catches.
Tim and Roelof will be remaining with Somerset until at least the end of the 2018 season whilst Johann’s extension is until the end of next season.
Shortly after the players signed on the dotted line Somerset Director of Cricket, Matt Maynard said: “All three have played a key part in helping us to enjoy considerable success in the Royal London One-Day Cup and the Specsavers County Championship this year. They still have a lot to offer Somerset and feature heavily in our plans for the future, so I am very pleased that they have committed themselves to being part of what we are trying to achieve.”
