Hat-Trick for Jack at Awards Dinner
A sold out County Room enjoyed an evening to remember at the Cooper Associates County Ground last night as we staged our Annual Awards Dinner.
More than 200 people were in attendance to enjoy a four course dinner and find out who had scooped the 2016 Somerset County Cricket Club awards.
Guests, players and coaches were welcomed by SCCC Chairman Andy Nash and then CEO Guy Lavender made presentations to Chris Rogers, Alex Barrow and Pete Sanderson who will all be leaving the Club this winter.
Master of Ceremonies for the evening Chris Bentley began proceedings by inviting Club President Richard Parsons to present the Champagne Moment Award to James Hildreth following his recent heroics against Nottinghamshire. The batsman made an incredible century despite suffering a fractured ankle early on in his innings.
Tom Abell was then presented with the Community Player of the Year Award and a £500 voucher from Michael Spiers Jewellers for his outstanding work for the Club off the field in 2016.
Academy Director Steve Snell then took to the stage to review the Second XI season and to reveal that Dom Bess was the winner of the Tom Pearce Award for the Second XI/Academy Player of the Year. He received his trophy from Richard Biggs, Headmaster of Kings College.
Next up was the Supporters Player of the Year. This award was voted for by Somerset fans and they selected Jack Leach as the winner. Jack received his award from Paul Prouse of Rotec Hydraulics who are our Official Royal London One-Day Cup Partner.
After the main course was served attention returned to the stage where Jane Fletcher of the Real Shaving Company, SCCC’s Official NatWest T20 Blast Partner presented Roelof van der Merwe with the White Ball Player of the Year Award.
Jack Leach then picked up his second award of the evening when he collected the County Championship Player of the Year trophy from Nevil Horne of Mailadoc, our Official Specsavers County Championship Partner.
All rounder Peter Trego then took centre stage as he conducted a highly entertaining question and answer session with Club Captain’s Chris Rogers and Jim Allenby.
Marcus Trescothick was presented with a Special Achievement Award from Director of Cricket Matt Maynard to commemorate the fact that Marcus has broken the Club record for the most First Class catches.
It was then time for the main award of the evening with a number of players vying for the title of 2016 Player of the Season. Ian Blunt from our Main Partner, St Austell Brewery announced to a hushed County Room that the winner was … Jack Leach! The left arm spinner received a standing ovation from everyone present as he made his way to the stage to collect his third award of the evening.
As local band The Man from Funkle began to play and the dance floor became full Jack Leach said: “It’s a real honour to pick up three awards tonight. I can’t believe it. The Somerset fans mean so much to me so to win the Supporters Player of the Year is incredibly special. 2016 has been a good year but it’s not all about me. Every single player in the squad has played their part so these awards are for them as well. It’s been a great season for the Club as a whole and I feel really privileged to have been a part of that.”
