Second XI T20 derby: Comprehensive win for Somerset

Somerset claimed a comprehensive seven-wicket win over local rivals Gloucestershire in this Second XI T20 match at Taunton Vale Sports Club today.

The home side won the toss and elected to bowl.

Will Smale and Joe Phillips shared an opening stand of of 53 before the latter was caught by Roelof van der Merwe off the bowling of Ollie Heard for 24 in the fifth over.

Tom Lace could only add four before he was trapped lbw by van der Merwe and the Somerset bowlers began to stem the flow of runs. Lewis Goldsworthy claimed two quick wickets and 117 for three soon became 121 for five.

Smale was eventually dismissed for 95 from just 56 balls as the visitors reached 171 for six from their allotted overs.

The Somerset reply got off to the worst possible start when Tom Banton was bowled by David Payne off the first ball of the innings.

However, Will Smeed and Sean Dickson added 70 for the second wicket before Smeed fell for 31 in the seventh over.

Dickson (73) then shared a 73-run stand with Ben Green and the Somerset pair broke the back of the run chase.

In the end it was left to Green (57 not out) to see his side over the line with a boundary off the penultimate ball of the 18th over.
