Tom was born and brought up in Taunton and has played right through the Somerset age group teams before graduating from the Somerset Academy.
He enjoyed a highly successful career at Taunton School where in 2012 he captained the first team and scored 1,156 runs. He also broke many batting records which had stood for a long time and was named Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year in 2012.
Tom made his debut for Somerset 2nd XI in 2010 and in 2013 enjoyed great success. In all formats of the games he played in 23 matches and scored 1,019 runs at an average of 37.74, including two centuries.
He made his Championship debut in the match against Warwickshire at Taunton in August 2014 scoring 95 and failing by 5 runs to become the first Somerset born player to score a century on debut since 1935.
Tom enjoyed his best season to date in 2015 during which he scored his maiden century for the Club as well as five 50s. His knock against Hampshire will be remembered by everyone who was in attendance, as he ended with 131 in a wonderful opening partnership with his captain Marcus Trescothick. Abell was named as the LV Breakthrough player of the year in September 2015 as a recognition of his efforts during the season.
