A letter from our Chairman
2020 a year of Continued success and unprecedented challenges.
With the unprecedented 2020 season now behind us, I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly reflect on the year gone by and to look ahead to 2021.
In particular I wanted to thank you all for your continued and loyal support during what has been one of the most challenging years in the Club’s history. In addition to that, I also wanted to express my gratitude to all of those who have already renewed their Membership for next season. The number of Membership renewals that we have received has been fantastic and everyone at the Club has been genuinely moved by your desire to support your Club during these difficult times. Your unwavering backing during the current situation has been nothing short of magnificent and your loyal support is one of the main reasons why Somerset County Cricket Club is so incredibly special.
In spite of the disruption brought to us all by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Club demonstrated considerable resilience both on and off the field.
Despite the significant operational challenges that this year has created, our playing staff, coaches and support staff continued to perform with incredible skill and commitment. The team’s success in the Bob Willis Trophy is a tribute to their efforts.
Particularly pleasing was the continued emergence of young talent that has been developed through our excellent Pathway system, which bodes extremely well for future seasons. The continued collaboration with our National Counties partners in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset remains a key component of our player development programme.
2020 was also another good year for Western Storm. Despite narrowly missing out on a place in the final of the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy, we definitely saw enough to know that there is a rich vein of talent running through the region.
Away from the professional game, we should also be proud of the efforts from our Pathway Team in providing an extensive match programme for both boys and girls. By necessity this was organised at very short notice but despite this we were able to provide opportunities for over 400 players to play competitive cricket. Of course, thanks also go to the parents of the players. The number of miles travelled, and the amount of laundry done during the summer is not something that can ever be overlooked!
It was also good to see the Somerset Women participating in some competitive matches this summer, and the young team will have gained a good deal of experience which will stand them in good stead moving forwards.
I would also like to thank the Executive Team and all of our staff for their commitment and support. Under the leadership Of Gordon Hollins, who has endured a baptism of fire since joining us as CEO in March, they have worked tirelessly to make the very best of a difficult situation. Particular thanks are due to those who have sadly left the Club as a direct consequence of the Pandemic.
From a Member’s and supporter’s perspective I know that you missed watching Somerset in action in person in 2020. I can assure you all that the players, coaches and staff certainly missed having you present at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
As previously mentioned, this year has put considerable pressure on the Club’s financial resources. Almost all of our normal sources of income have been eliminated. It is in this context that we would wish to acknowledge the major contribution that many of you made in donating your 2020 Membership subscription and continuing to support the Club in what is a very difficult and uncertain period for us all. Alongside this we received further donations from many individuals which are much appreciated.
We also acknowledge the continued support of many of our Commercial Partners.
More so now than ever, Membership subscriptions are a critical contribution to the Club’s revenues, and we would like to sincerely thank you all for showing your incredible support under such difficult circumstances. Your invaluable contribution will help us to continue to invest in your Club and in particular the cricket programme, both professional and pathway.
Although you haven’t been able to watch the Somerset team live this season, we hope you have enjoyed making the most of watching the live stream. Our service has been the subject of much praise from Somerset Members and supporters, but also throughout the game, and particular thanks must go to Ben Warren and Dan Cooper and everyone involved for the continued and excellent development of both content and production.
We have very much enjoyed providing you with the opportunity to watch Somerset in action and we will endeavour to continue to develop the service further moving forward.
I once again thank you all for your excellent support on behalf of the whole Club. We very much look forward to seeing you back at the Cooper Associates County Ground in 2021, enjoying further success both on and off the field.
Keep safe and I hope we can begin to move forward as soon as possible and get back on with our lives and cricket with some kind of normality.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
