Academy players picked for England Development Week
Four Somerset Academy cricketers have been selected to take part in an England Development Week that is taking place during April.
Sam Young, Ned Leonard, Kasey Aldridge and Lewis Goldsworthy have all been selected to attend the week which will consist of a training camp as well as some matches against Bath Cricket Club, Gloucestershire Second XI, Ireland Academy and Scotland Academy.
Director of the Somerset Academy, Steve Snell said: “It’s really good news that these four young men have got the chance to spend a week within an international environment.
“For both Sam Young and Ned Leonard it’s the first time that they’ve been recognized at this level, so it’s a big moment for them. I know that they’ll be doing all they can to impress during the time that they are there.”
Some of the games will be taking place at Bath Ccricket Club and also at Rockhampton CC. There will also be a training camp in Loughborough that will be led by Jon Lewis, who is the England Young Lions Coach.
“This is a really good opportunity in early season for these guys to transition their winter work into match play cricket,” said Steve. “A lot of work has been done indoors over the winter, so now there’s a great chance for them transfer what they have been doing on to the national stage.
“The players will see this as a stepping stone on the path to joining the professional staff, but there’s a lot of work and performances to be put in for that to happen, but being in these types of environment is a chance to show what they can do.”
In the last few seasons a number of Somerset Academy players have featured in the England Under 19s set up about which Steve said: “We seem to have had a good track record in recent years of guys from Somerset being involved in Youth Internationals. The main goal is to make sure that they are going on to do that for Somerset in First Class and one-day cricket as well.
“Recently we have seen several of our young players enjoying success at Under 19 level. Tom Lammonby was named Player of the Series against India back in 2017 and Ben Green, Tom Banton, George Bartlett and Dom Bess have all been successful. These four are now following in their footsteps, which is great to see.
“It’s very pleasing for the four boys. It also gives them the confidence that they are doing something right and that people are noticing the way that they are developing. I think that it’s really good news for everyone.”Back to News
