Somerset CCC wishes Anya good luck at Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Everyone associated with Somerset County Cricket Club will have their fingers crossed for Anya Shrubsole this evening.

The Western Storm, England and Somerset bowler has been named on the shortlist for the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year

The event takes place at Echo Arena, Liverpool tonight and you can vote for Anya online or by ‘phone during the live show which will be broadcast by the BBC.

The 25 year old played a starring role as England won the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup in front of a packed house at Lord’s.

Anya took the last wicket as England overcame India in the final to finish with record breaking figures of six for 46.

She also helped Western Storm win the Kia Super League title for the first time.

Anya, who hails from Bath and graduated through the Somerset Academy, made her England debut in 2008. Since then she has gone on to represent her country in 49 ODIs, 49 IT20s and five Tests taking more than 140 wickets across the three formats.

This year also saw her become the first female cricketer to win the Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Award.

She received the award following her selfless actions in the ICC Women’s World Cup Semi-Final victory over South Africa at Bristol in July.

In a tense finish, England won with only two balls remaining as Anya’s boundary off Shabnim Ismail saw the host nation over the line. Rather than celebrating she comforted distraught South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk before joining her joyful teammates.

After receiving her nomination the fast bowler tweeted: “Humbled to be named amongst some incredible athletes! Top of the list of things I never expected to happen!”

BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be broadcast tonight with voting opening during the live show.
