Artists adopted by Somerset County Cricket Club

Somerset County Cricket Club have adopted artists, Jo Mortimer, Norman Steel, and Debbi Sutton as part of the creative and performing arts festival, Taunton Live 2017.

As part of the festival their work will be displayed at The Stragglers Coffee House at the The Cooper Associates County Ground from July 24th to July 30th.

The Artwork

Debbi Sutton’s work is called “Three Stumps” and consists of ghost like, paper bats standing on a white gesso board and is described as “more shadow than solid. Contemplative and challenging. The work can be viewed simply as a curiosity or explored,” she said. “Layers of meaning unpicked; prompting spectators to think, and through thinking, make connections.”

In Norman Steel’s painting spectators watch Adam Hose as he faces a bowler. “I try to depict the inner energy of my subjects as they go about their daily lives, catching them in the moment,” he said. “This commission reflects the dynamic energy of the adversaries; batsman and bowler.”

Describing her work, Jo Mortimer said: “Painted in acrylic inks, inspired by the history and imagery of Somerset County Cricket Club, the painting encompasses the old and the new by including an antique cricket bat and a cricket ball alongside the newly cut grass of the pitch and one of the iconic buildings at the Club.”

You can also meet the artists as Norman Steel and Debbi Sutton will be at the Stragglers on Saturday 29 July between 2pm and 4pm.

Stragglers Exhibition Hours:  Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm (closed on Wednesday July 26th).
