Award for Somerset Groundstaff
The Somerset Groundstaff were honoured at the recent Business of Cricket Awards.
The awards, known as the BOCAs, aim to recognise non-playing excellence in the professional game.
The event was held at Emirates Old Trafford and was hosted by BBC broadcaster Mark Chapman.
There were several awards presented on the night with Somerset sharing the Best One-Day Pitch Award with Hampshire.
After collecting the award Somerset Head Groundsman, Simon Lee said: “We’re really happy. It’s great recognition after a long season. Everyone was happy with our one-day pitches this season and we had a lot of positive feedback from the players and coaching staff from visiting counties too.
“We try to create pitches that will be entertaining for the crowds and I think most of the games ended up that way. The one thing we’ve worked on over the last couple of years is bringing pace and bounce in to the pitches and that really helps the ball come on to the bat.
“It just comes down to being as precise as you can be in the build-up and it helps if the weather is good!
“We’ve changed the way that we prepare one-day pitches a number of times since I’ve been here, but I think we’ve now found a formula that works. We all know what we have to do and when we have to do it in order to get to that end product.
“I’ve got a great team and if they didn’t work as hard as they do, we wouldn’t be successful. We all work towards the same goal and without their help we wouldn’t have won this award.”
Talking about the awards, Gordon Hollins, ECB Chief Operating Officer said, “Nights like tonight give us the chance to say thank you and to recognise the work put in by the hundreds of staff who play a vital role in delivering the success of our professional game.”
