Flashback: 2011 T20 quarter-final - Notts v Somerset

The last time that Somerset met Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in the quarter-final of the domestic T20 competition, it was the side from the Cooper Associates County Ground that came out on top.

On August 7th 2011 Somerset made the trip to Nottinghamshire for the last eight clash and the scenario was very similar to the one that we find ourselves in six years later. Notts had finished top of the North Group whilst Somerset had finished in fourth place in the South Group.

On the day the two line ups were as follows:

Nottinghamshire: Alex Hales, Riki Wessels, Adam Voges*, Samit Patel, Chris Read+, Scott Elstone, Andre Adams, Steven Mullaney, Graeme White, Darren Pattinson, Luke Fletcher.

Somerset: Marcus Trescothick*, Craig Kieswetter+, Peter Trego, James Hildreth, Kieran Pollard, Jos Buttler, Arul Suppiah, Craig Meschede, Lewis Gregory, Alfonso Thomas, Murali Kartik.

After winning the toss Nottinghamshire captain Adam Voges elected to bat.

The visitors made a quick breakthrough as Riki Wessels was caught by Peter Trego off the bowling of Lewis Gregory for six and Notts were nine for one. Voges and Alex Hales moved the score on to 72 before the home captain was caught by Kieran Pollard to give Craig Meschede a wicket.

Hales was in fine form and had moved to 78 from 51 balls when he fell to Gregory courtesy of a catch by James Hildreth to leave Notts on 132 for three. Just three runs later Alfonso Thomas removed Samit Patel for 28 and then, with the score on 141, Thomas then accounted for Scott Elstone. Eventually the home side posted a total of 169 for five from their allotted overs.

The Somerset reply got off tho the worst possible start when Marcus Trescothick fell for three with the score on eight. Peter Trego and Craig Kieswetter then steadied the ship until the former departed for 22 with the score on 59. Somerset slipped to 81 for three when James Hildreth was stumped by Chris Read.

Kieswetter made 49 from 37 balls but eventually fell to Darren Pattinson to leave the visitors on 106 for four. This brought Kieran Pollard and Jos Buttler together and the two of them simply took the game away from Notts.

Still needing 63 from the final five overs, the two Somerset batsmen smashed their way to 66 off just 26 balls. Pollard finished with 47 off 25 whilst Buttler hit 34 from 14 as Somerset won by six wickets with five balls to spare.
