From The Archive: Steve Waugh

In conjunction with partners Cooper Associates Somerset County Cricket Club will be looking to fill the current void of cricket by regularly delving into extensive Club Archives to look back on some of our proudest moments.

Over their long and colourful history, Somerset fans have had the chance to watch some of the best cricketers in the world and they don’t come much better than Steve Waugh.

The young Australian was just 22 years old when he arrived, but during his short time at Taunton he certainly made an impression and his stay is still talked about by those who were fortunate enough to have watched him in action.

Waugh, who was signed as cover for New Zealander Martin Crowe, made his debut towards the end of 1987 and made an impression right from the start.

He thrilled the supporters at Weston-super-Mare on his debut for Somerset, claiming three wickets in Hampshire’s first innings which he followed up with an unbeaten 71.

That was just the beginning of what lay in store and before he returned home at the end of the summer he hit an unbeaten 111 at the Oval and 137 not out against Gloucestershire at Bristol to leave with an average of 113 from his four Championship matches!

Waugh returned for virtually the whole of 1988 and didn’t disappoint. The high class right handed batsman compiled 1314 First Class runs, including six centuries, with a best of 161 against Kent at Canterbury.

The young Australian also topped the County’s Refuge Assurance League batting averages by hitting 534 runs, including two centuries, one of which was against Middlesex on his debut appearance at Lord’s.

His stay was only short but the memories have lasted for a long time.

In the 19 First Class games he appeared in for the county, Waugh scored 1654 runs at an average of 78.76 which included eight centuries.
