Gimblett's Hill: Update

Somerset County Cricket Club are delighted to confirm that Gimblett’s Hill is set to be remodelled in order to improve accessibility on matchdays, while retaining the history and character of one of the most popular parts of the Copper Associates County Ground.

SCCC will be supported by Level Playing Field on this project, and are pleased to make this announcement as part of the organisation’s Weeks of Action campaign, which is designed to highlight and celebrate the work that is being done to promote access and inclusion.

Level Playing Field work with sports clubs, disabled supporters associations, governing bodies and other organisations to help promote and ensure good access and inclusion at sports venues.

Regarding the project, Tony Taylor, Level Playing Field Chair said: “Level Playing Field’s annual Weeks of Action campaign is an opportunity for sports clubs and organisations across the country to highlight the importance of access and inclusion for their disabled supporters. This is the 18th year of the campaign, and after being restricted to a largely ‘virtual’ campaign last year, due to the pandemic, it’s great to be able to celebrate the return of fans to stadiums and sports grounds, where they belong.

“We’re delighted that Somerset County Cricket Club are supporting this year’s campaign by announcing plans to develop their ground to improve the matchday experience of their disabled supporters. This will make a huge difference both to existing disabled supporters and future fans, who will be able to enjoy a greater level of independence and inclusion at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

“We look forward to seeing and hearing how these plans progress, and to supporting Somerset County Cricket Club as they make improvements for disabled fans.”

Somerset CCC CEO, Gordon Hollins added: “Cricket is a game for everyone and there should be no barriers which prevent anyone from enjoying or participating in this game that we all love. All of our Members, supporters, visitors and guests should be able to enjoy their experience, whether that be on a matchday or a non-matchday. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that we are constantly looking to make the Cooper Associates County Ground more accessible for everyone.

“It’s great to have the support of organisations like Level Playing Field on this initiative, and I am confident that these works will be the ‘best in class’ for a county cricket ground in this country and something that we will all be proud of.

“I can confirm that an element of the remodelled Gimblett’s Hill will still be retained for our Members and supporters.

“The engraved bricks which are currently located in Legends Square will be sensitively and carefully removed before being reintegrated into the new development, which will also feature electric charging points for mobility vehicles.”

Work is due to commence on April 19th and the club will do everything possible to ensure that the match day experience isn’t detrimentally impacted during the LV= Insurance County Championship fixtures in late April and May. Within the schedule of works, it has been agreed that portions of Gimblett’s Hill will be available for wheelchair users for the Vitality Blast fixtures.

The work is scheduled to be completed in June.
