2nd XI Friendly: Glamorgan v Somerset - Glamorgan win by 1 run
Despite a century from Tom Banton, Somerset Second XI fell agonisingly short of pulling off a remarkable victory over their Glamorgan hosts at Newport.
At the start of the day Somerset declared on their overnight total of 178 for 4, which included 68 from Pete Trego and and unbeaten 54 from George Bartlett.
Batting for a second time Glamorgan declared their innings on 193 for 7, Rich Edwards claiming four for 54.
Chasing a target of 317 for victory Bartlett made 65 to help Somerset get to 161 for 4 by the tea break at which stage Banton was unbeaten on 31 while Fin Trenouth was not out 21.
The fifth wicket pair came together with the score on 109 add added 114 together before Trenouth was out for 52.
Banton went onto make 117 before he departed and eventually Somerset were all out for 315, just two runs short of their target.
Day two of Somerset’s Second XI Friendly against Glamorgan at Newport Cricket Club was ruined by the rain which limited play to just 27.4 overs, at the end of which the visitors are still 123 runs in arrears with six first innings wickets remaining.
Resuming on their overnight total of 51 for 2 off 9 overs, in reply to the hosts 301 for 8, Pete Trego and George Bartlett who both began the day unbeaten on 16, took the total onto 139 before Trego was out for 68.
The third wicket partnership between Bartlett and Trego added 116 runs.
Bartlett was joined by Tom Banton who together added 35 before Banton was dismissed for 25.
Shortly afterwards at 3.10pm with the total on 178 for 4 off 36.4 overs the rain started to fall and play was abandoned, by which time Bartlett was unbeaten on 54 while Fin Trenouth was not out 4.
Somerset Seconds finished the opening day of their three day friendly match against Glamorgan at Newport Cricket Club 250 runs in arrears with eight first innings wickets remaining.
After opting to bat first the hosts batted for the majority of the day before declaring on 301 for 8 off 98 overs.
The pick of the Somerset bowlers was leg spinner Max Waller who ended with 3 for 28 from the 19 overs he sent down, three of which were maidens, and Louie Shaw who ended with 2 for 67 off 18, while there was one each for Pete Trego, Rich Edwards and Joe Gore.
In reply Somerset had moved onto 51 for 2 in the 9 overs that remained, with George Bartlett and Trego who came together with the score on 23, both ending unbeaten on 16.
Somerset Seconds take on their Glamorgan counterparts in a 3 day friendly match at Newport Cricket Club today where the start time is at 11am.
